National cyclo-cross Championships, Sutton Park
Hannah Payton gained a silver medal in the U16 category which should prepare her well for next years jump to junior. Isla Rowntree also took a medal, this time gold as the winner of the vets race, her first attempt at this category.
Cyclo-cross league finishing positions
Hannah Payton won the overall title in the West Midlands Cyclo-cross league (youth girls) after consistently performing well in every event she rode. George Appleby who rode in the U16 category gained a creditable 8th position.
Tom Payton also had a good season and would have almost certainly won the league had he ridden enough qualifying events, however, illness and National series duties prevented this. Tom won the National series competition for the U23's
Onto the vets and Kevin Payton finished 6th overall and Roger Allen 9th.
With many SCC riders competing this season, we consider this a resounding success, with other riders making their debut, notably Anthony Neave in the U14s, Adam Moore and Bryan Hedges joining the vets races.
Get Cycling for 50+
An opportunity for SCC members to assist with ‘Get Cycling for 50 Plus’ by becoming volunteer cycling leaders. Initially the plan is to hold one cycle ride a week on a weekday for participants to start cycling. This will be very basic to start with and will include a couple of sessions with the Road Safety Team to ensure riders are adept at bike handling, road safety, riding in groups, etc. Following these initial training sessions, the riders will be taken on short rides starting with 30-minutes to 1-hour on quiet roads and canal towpaths. Week-by-week the sessions will be progressive as the group’s confidence improves.
The first ride will be launched in April 2010 with cycling leaders receiving training on 1 March 2010 based at Mary Stevens Park, Stourbridge.
Hannah's Week December 2009
Hannah Payton scored a double during the first week of December with an award from Dudley Schools Sports as an achiever and the icing on the cake, taking the Midlands cyclo-cross U16 girls championship, beating her main adversary, Beth Crumpton from Halesowen. Beth has repeatedly beaten Hannah this season, but Hannah made it count when it mattered most. January sees the National cyclo-cross championship event at Sutton Park, Birmingham on the 9th and 10th. SCC will be represented by the Paytons.
Club Hill Climb 31/10/2009
27 riders took part in the ascent of two giant climbs around Clent on 31st October. First climb was the locally cyclist-renowned Farleys' Hill, which introduced many novices to the pain of hill climbing. Second ascent was an off-road ride to the Four Stones from the Hill Tavern. Much cheering and ecouragement to all competitors helped the event along, the eventual winner was Tom Payton with Chris Halford 2nd and Roger Allen 3rd. First youth prize went to George Appleby.
More
SCC riders competing!
2009
has seen a number of our riders competing in road races for
the first time: Richard Coleman, Keith Green, Warren Neate,
Dave Payne, Chris Halford have all taken out licences and
put them to good use. Results have been good, testament to
the variety of rides we have on offer. The winter and summer
training rides have been a good contributor to these performances.

"Interesting"
Bikes night 16th March
Some members
brought their "special bikes along for all to view on
clubnight. These were presented in a line with the exhibitors
describing their trusty steeds. First off was carol Rowntree
with her 1940's shopper, complete with basket and rust. Next
was Isla with her 1992 prototype which was built as a "get
to work" bike. Made from 531, racks front and rear, mudguards,
chunky tyres. A nice roller but never made production. Jamie
showed off his machine that was rescued from scrap heap, very
nicely built considering its history! Next in line was Louises
mountain bike she rode in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, complete
with her race number and tags. Designed by Isla, built by
Raleigh.
Terrys
Pashley was next, a replica from a 1930's design, with a photograph
of Uncle Jack Rowntree alonside a similar machine. Sturmey
Archer hub gears, Brooks leather saddle, nice big fat tyres,
what more could you desire? Stefan was showing off his new
Isaac TT bike, with carbon everything, incontrast with Terry's
bike. There was a George Longstaff tandem next, with a kiddyback,
used by the Paytons for the last 10 years, a splendid specimen.
Then was Ians mtb, bought for £30 and lovingly restored,
and used for the last few years. Kevins Mercian track bike
was also on display, very retro but also beautifully original.
Last to be seen was Bruce Mantoms folder which is a rebadged
Dahon - with Dawes insiginia. Bruce demonstrated it's speedy
construction and detatchable pedals. A very worthwhile experimental
"Interesting Bikes" night bound to be repated in
the future.
Roller
Racing
The finale
was held at the clubroom on Monday 9th March, this time we
only had 4 contenders, the overall winner was Robin Smith,
with Kevin Payton runner-up. This was great entertainment
during the winter months, causing some real pain to the competitiors.
2009 AGM
The AGM
was run without controversy and the 2008 committee was re-elected.
Trophies presented were: The Cyclo-Cross Trophy awarded to
Hannah Payton for gaining most points (1st - 6th) in BC 'cross
events during the winter, Isla Rowntree 2nd, Kevin Payton
3rd. Club Member of the Year was awarded to Matt Bowker for
his efforts to make the Go-Ride scheme a success, including
organising extra rides for our young newcomers and for successfully
completing his coaches course. Wag's Kup was presented to
Bob Smith for the silliest mistake of the year. Bob arrived
for a cycling holiday in Spain and produced out of his case
2 left shoes: one red, one yellow, one spd and one Look! Congratulations
to Bryan Hedges who was made a life member.
Roy Archer
We are
saddened to report the death of Roy Archer who passed away
after an illness on 22nd February 2009. Roy was a stalwart,
founder member of SCC, well known as a CTT (RTTC) timekeeper.
Funeral will be on 6th March at 1145 at Stourbridge Crematorium.
February
snow
There
was a shift from early season road riding for the "week
of snow" in early February where the Beacon Audaxes were
cancelled so some of our riders joined the off-road groups
and rode some of the bridleways over Clent and the surrounding
Stourbridge area. See our image
gallery.
