SCC News

This is the first of hopefully many regular newsletters with information about your cycling club.

This month:

Congratulations to Wally Fowler who gained a gold medal in the Masters World Track Championships in Sydney. The video can be seen here. Wallys’ first claim club is Halesowen hence the purple strip although he rides socially with us.

Wally Fowler, World Champion.

Stourbridge riders are fairing well in cyclo-cross so far this season: Robin Smith was 2nd U23 in the Three Peaks event, beaten by SCC 2nd claim member Tom Payton. We had 7 finishers and a total of 29 riders and helpers made their way northwards for this classic cycling event. We have been represented well in the National Series by Isla and the Payton family. West Midlands events are in full swing, we are currently at event 5 this Sunday which will be held at Baggeridge.

Roller Racing has returned to Stourbridge! The first Monday of each month will see roller racing at the clubroom. The first event was ridden by 10 members, a big cross section of abilities and ages. Some of our Go-Ride participants rode, also off-roaders, tourers and racers took part. League tables are published via the results page.

Club rides are being well attended, the 0830 group regularly have over 10 riders each Sunday, Saturday 0830 attracts approximately 8 but fluctuates. Touring rides continue with a well populated runs list.

Membership:

We have welcomed around 40 new members this year, almost all of them either new to cycling or new to cycling clubs. Current membership figures are 143.

Go-Ride:

Following the success of Go-Ride, we welcome 7 new youth members and some parents. This gives a sound foundation for next years Go-Ride initiative, thanks to our coaches and helpers for these sessions.

There is an intermediate off-road ride organised by Matt – Saturday, Bonded Warehouse, 1245. Aimed at young riders. Bring Bikes in working order, helmet and dress for the weather!

Clothing:

There is a new clothing order in, expected delivery first week of November, garments include jerseys, shorts and winter training tights.

Future rides:

Our Events Calendar is now showing 2009 Sportive events, keep a check on them as some need to be entered imminently.

Racing:

There is still a vacancy on the committee for a racing secretary. Duties would be to co-ordinate race entries and SCC race promotions. In order for us to organise any club 10’s next year we could do with a dozen volunteers to work a rota. There have been some offers of help but we still don’t have enough to make an event series proposal. There is also a need to promote a road race for the West Midlands League if at all possible. Anybody interested, contact Terry.

A publicity officer is also sought, duties would include: regular submissions to local and cycling press, compilation and distribution of this newsletter.

Mid-week rides (Tuesdays) leave from The Talbot, Belbroughton, 0930. Also, a regular ride to The Spiders Web takes place each Friday. Riders make their own way there to meet at 1100 and return together.

Next Monday: Slide show at the clubroom by Pat & Keith Green, “Cycling in Nepal
